You know that the coffee table can hold, well, a coffee cup. Or, a place for books, magazines, remotes, etc. However, this wonderful piece of furniture can also be a focal point in your room. Today, there are so many delicious choices to choose from. Organic pieces that bring a ton of texture to a space are a favorite, as well as ethnic, contemporary, and traditional styles.

Here are some guidelines:

  • If you have a lot of wood furniture already in your room, choose another material like metal, glass, or stone. You want visual interest.
  • If you are living in a small space, a mirrored or acrylic table will appear almost invisible and weightless giving the feeling of more space.
  • Make sure that the table top is easy enough for reaching.
  • Allow 18 inches of space to allow easy movement around the table.
  • One caveat: With small children, be careful of choosing glass and tables with sharp edges for obvious reasons.

These photos from HOUZZ are just a few examples of beautiful, interesting, and in some cases, eye-catching coffee tables.

Also, you can design your own coffee table. Any base that is heavy enough will work. Flea markets, second hand stores, consignment shops, architectural remnants outlets are just a few places to search. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box. Once you’ve found your perfect base, add a piece of glass for the top. Make sure the glass is thick enough for weight and safety. Tell your glass cutter what your base is and what you’re using the glass for.

Please let me know if these examples of coffee tables intrigue you.
I’d also love to see a photo if you’ve made a table of your own.

Until next time…
