Tangerine Tango Coffee Mug“Stick to the things you really love. An honest room is always up to date.” -Billy Baldwin

I wish these were my words because they say exactly what I feel about home design trends. So I’ll borrow the late, great interior designer’s words instead. You see, it’s not really about trends so much, as it is about trends with staying power. I don’t have any clients who want home decor that screams trends. It’s too expensive and we can tire of them quickly—just like fashion trends.

  • Color- greys and taupes. These neutral colors give quiet appeal as backdrops for pops of color. For instance, this years “Color of the Year” is Pantone’s “Tangerine Tango.” It’s a very dynamic reddish-orange that certainly brings energy into a space.
  • Wallpaper- Soon I’m going to do a post just about wallpaper because the technology has improved so much. It’s a wonderful way to add texture and interest to a room.
  • Downsizing- This will continue. Today, we want a simpler and more affordable living style. We want our home to be calm, peaceful, and less cluttered.
  • Mid-Century Modern- Baby Boomers will continue to like versions of  mid-century modern furniture probably because of the memories they evoke. What we remember as an easier, safer, and simpler time. I know, “Misty, Water-Colored Memories…”
  • Re-Purposing- The last several years have been an economic challenge for many of us. We no longer can be the “throw away society” we maybe once were.  Better to find a way to re-use that table or re-cover that couch.
  • Living Green- This movement will continue to grow simple because our planet needs it to in order to survive. Green living is also better for our health. Newer products will appear that make living green easy and affordable.

So there you have it. Trends that are not really trends at all. They happen because we live a better life because of them. They have staying power.

Can you add to this list? Let me know on my Facebook page. I’d love for you to share your opinions.

Until next time…
